We Are Street Medicine Phoenix!

Compassion + Human Kindness = Health Equity

Improving access & delivery of primary preventive medical care

Training the Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals

Welcome To Street Medicine Phoenix

We are a student-driven interprofessional health care and social justice team consisting of students and faculty primarily from the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University.

SHOW Clinic

Street Medicine Phoenix is an outreach arm of Student Health Outreach for Wellness (SHOW), a tri-university, interprofessional, student-run initiative dedicated to providing vulnerable populations with access to free healthcare and health education programs in metro Phoenix.

INTERPROFESSIONAL TEAMS

Student volunteers and faculty preceptors represent a variety of professions such as medicine, physician assistant, nursing, social work, nutrition, public health, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychiatry. Interprofessionalism in SMP enables the provision of holistic care to each patient and creates a unique learning environment in which students and preceptors from different professions can learn from one another.

Community Collaboration

Street Medicine Phoenix collaborates with organizations across Phoenix to provide services to individuals experiencing homelessness and meet their unmet needs. From these collaborations, SMP is able to provide vision screenings, naloxone kits, prescription eyeglasses, hygiene kits, Hepatitis A and flu vaccines, and testing for sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, Hepatitis C, and syphilis.

According to the Point-in-Time Count conducted by the Maricopa Association of Governments, on the night of January 21, 2019, there were:

6,614

experiencing homelessness

&

3,188

living on the streets

Core Functions

Our solution to addressing social determinants of health for individuals experiencing homelessness:

A new health initiative for individuals experiencing homelessness in Phoenix

The Birth of Street Medicine Phoenix

In May 2017, Justin Zeien, a first-year medical student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, and Jeffery Hanna, a graduate student in the Clinical Translational Science program at the College, created Street Medicine Phoenix after learning about other street medicine initiatives.

Needs Assessment Results

In 2018, a needs assessment of Phoenix's homeless population was conducted. The purpose of the needs assessment was to understand the needs and health concerns of individuals experiencing homelessness in Metro Phoenix. These results led to the development of the services offered by SMP.

SHOW Clinic

In May 2013, a group of students and faculty from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and The University of Arizona began developing Arizona’s first student-run clinic for vulnerable populations. This service-learning program was named the Student Health Outreach for Wellness (SHOW) Community Initiative.
