Needs Assessment of Phoenix's Unsheltered Homeless Population

To Address The Need, We Must First Understand The Need!

In the summer of 2018, a needs assessment was conducted to understand the prioritized needs, community resource utilization, sources of medical care, health literacy, health status, and demographics of Phoenix’s homeless population. We surveyed 144 unsheltered homeless adults in the Phoenix metro area and utilized the results to inform the development of Street Medicine Phoenix’s current services. For their participation, each individual received a backpack filled with basic life essentials including hygiene products, food, clothing, and water.

Needs Assessment Conclusions

Both medical care and transportation as top priority needs were strongly associated with suboptimal health
Medical care as a top priority need was also associated with utilizing an Emergency Department for medical care
Health illiteracy and obtaining medical care at an Emergency Department were associated with suboptimal health
